Silver Lake is a small suburban community situated in the heart of Indiana. The town falls under the jurisdiction of Kosciusko County and is the center of commerce in Lake Township. Silver Lake is slowly becoming a popular residential community especially for retirees and families looking for a laid back community where they can raise their kids. The town is located along several major highways which directly connect it to more developed towns and cities in Indiana including the likes of Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, and South Bend. This makes it one of the fastest-growing residential areas in the region.

History of Silver Lake, IN

Despite its small size, the town of Silver Lake has a long history that started somewhere in the late 1850s when the town was platted. Originally, the town was known as Silver Lakeville but the name was later changed to Silver Lake to match that of the neighboring lake. Some of the original structures that were constructed in the early stages of the town’s development exist till today. Silver Lake’s current post office is believed to be the oldest operational structure in the town, having been constructed five years before the incorporation of the town.

The Silver Lake Historic District which is also the central business district of Silver Lake is a depiction of the town’s continuous development starting from its inception in the mid-1800s all the way to the 1920s. Currently, the district boasts of being home to 19 recognized historical buildings that were constructed using different architectural styles including Romanesque Revival, Italianate, and Classical Revival among others. Some of these buildings include the Municipal Building which was constructed in 1910 and the Enos Hotel which was constructed in 1915.

Today, Silver Lake has flourished into a beautiful town with thriving businesses, a well-established education system, and beautiful neighborhoods. According to a 2016 population survey, Silver Lake has an approximated population of 925 residents. Its location near Silver Lake also makes it a popular low-key family fun destination. The growing tourism industry is expected to attract even more residents and investors to the town in the coming years. Despite being a predominantly white community, the town boasts of cultural diversity with more than two percent of the population coming from five different ethnicities.
